Rebecca

“Oh my God.” Rebecca was seated at her patio table in her backyard. Daisy and Zander were wrestling in the grass, the late afternoon sun was sending dappled shadows over the pool, and Max was seated next to her. She felt removed from it all, as though she was watching a video that she was not a real part of.

He’d been watching her. There were cameras in her yard and possibly in her house. Max wanted to go in with a security expert tomorrow and do a sweep. She couldn’t go inside, not even to get a toothbrush. She was going to have to decide whether to contact the police. There were going to be security lights and motion sensors and alarms. She would have to tell everything that had happened in college to God knew how many total strangers.

As all this swirled in her brain, she had a sudden thought. She looked at Max, who had been silent since telling her, giving her time to let all that he had said sink in.

“We have to call Mia,” she said.

“Already left her a message.”

She knew that some of her reaction to this action showed on her face. She wasn’t thrilled that he had reached out to her friend without her knowledge. She chose to let it go for the moment.

“Mia’s husband works for a very elite security firm. They might be able to help.”

“What do you mean by elite?” he asked. “Do you mean bodyguards? That type of thing?”

“Well, yes, I think they do that, but they’re more black ops guys, kind of. They’re called The Titan Group.”

Max’s eyes widened. “The Titan Group? Do you mean Jared Westin’s outfit?” he asked in evident surprise.

At the mention of Jared Westin, Rebecca felt herself stiffen slightly. Jared Westin had very obviously and very persistently hit on her at Mia and Colby’s wedding. The memory was enough to still unnerve her slightly.

“Yes. Do you know him?”

“Met him a few times. Dr. Bill knows him fairly well. Tried to hire me when I left active duty, but I was on my way back to school and wasn’t interested. His group is the best in the country. They would have resources and abilities that the cops would never have.”

Rebecca had a sudden thought. “Where am I going to sleep tonight? I need to call for a hotel and pack an overnight bag. I don’t even have a toothbrush.” She stood and looked around for her purse.

“Spock, I have a second bedroom. It doesn’t look like HGTV exploded in it, but it’s perfectly serviceable.”

“I can’t spend the night in your house,” she stated.

“You can, and you are. I also have sweats you can wear and extra toothbrushes. Once John and I do the sweep through your house tomorrow morning, you can go home and change for work. By the time you get off tomorrow, the rest of the security shit will be installed.”

“I can’t spend the night in your house,” she repeated.

“Why the everlasting fuck not?” he demanded.
